This project, delivered through the Programme and Project Partners (PPP) framework, involves a substantial £7 billion investment in Sellafield, Europe's largest nuclear site and the primary storage facility for the UK's nuclear waste and civil-owned plutonium. The site's infrastructure, dating back to the 1940s, necessitates ongoing modernization and safety enhancements.
The recent achievement is the third concrete pour for the 'south lift shaft,' a critical component designed to provide emergency access for firefighting teams. This feature is essential for ensuring the safety of personnel and the facility in emergency situations. Morgan Sindall's innovative approach, utilizing a hydraulic climbing platform, enables vertical construction in a safer and more efficient manner, reducing the need for cranes and temporary works while maintaining project momentum.
The SRP project's primary objective is to safely receive, process, and retreat special nuclear material packages from across the Sellafield site. These packages will include plutonium, which the government has decided to immobilize rather than process into potential fuel. This decision has had significant implications, leading to the suspension of operations by advanced modular reactor (AMR) developer newcleo in July 2025. The SRP project's inclusion in the National Infrastructure and Service Transformation Authority's (Nista's) Government's Major Projects Portfolio (GMPP) was cut in March 2026, but Nista assured that the project remains important and will continue to be supported and delivered in line with government priorities.
