Sydney's beaches are currently facing a double threat from two species of sharks, and the culprit is the weather. As temperatures rise and fall, bull sharks and great whites are being lured closer to the shore, creating a potentially dangerous situation for swimmers and surfers. Shark expert Dr. Chris Pepin-Neff warns that the current conditions are ideal for both species, with sea surface temperatures of 20 degrees and above attracting bull sharks and those below 20 degrees drawing in great whites. The recent heavy rain has also stirred up brackish water, providing perfect hunting grounds for bull sharks. This is a cause for concern, especially for surfers and swimmers, as it comes on the heels of a spate of shark attacks in Sydney, including the tragic death of 12-year-old Nico Antic. Dr. Pepin-Neff advises surfers to stick together in groups for safety, as the noise generated by a group can intimidate sharks and keep them at a distance. For swimmers, he recommends avoiding brackish water and staying between the flags at ocean beaches.
